47. Ondu, eradu,.. Kannada gottilla
What is the time in Bengaluru?
It was in the late 1980s and I had been in Bangalore for about 4 months only.
I am a positively minded and good natured, Hindi speaking North Indian of a cheerful disposition.
I had joined work as an engineer and had learned a few Kannada phrases such as ‘kalsa madi, uta aiyta, time eshtu, aina swamy, Neer kudi’.
I was put to the test when one day, someone stopped me on the road and asked me what time it was.
It was 7 PM and I was newly armed with the knowledge of Kannada numbers. I started counting the numbers, “Ondu, eradu, muru, nalku, Anju, ailu...”
I just could not remember what the word was for seven. After struggling for 15 seconds, I finally said, “Kannada Gottilla!”
When I was narrating this story to Courseloka, I was informed that the number ‘Anju’ is not a Kannada word. Ha ha!
